the final result while it isn't perfect it's a lot clearer and the only way to get it perfect would be a complete respray.

How to Tell If Your Car’s Paint Is Damaged And What to Do About It!

You step back after a wash expecting a shine… but something’s off. The paint doesn’t pop. It looks dull, tired even a little scratched.

Chances are, your paint’s already taken a beating. Most drivers don’t even realize their clear coat is suffering until it’s too late.

Let’s break down how to spot paint damage and what to do to save your ride’s finish.

Common signs your paint is damaged

Swirl Marks- Fine spiderweb-style scratches caused by bad washing techniques (like those from drive-through car washes).

Faded or Cloudy Paint- Loss of depth and gloss, usually from sun damage or harsh chemicals. Your paint starts to look flat and lifeless.

Oxidation- a chalky, dry look especially on older or unprotected cars. That’s your clear coat breaking down.

Water Spot Etching- Hard water minerals that baked into your paint and left permanent marks.

Scratches & Abrasions- You can see them, feel them and no, they won’t buff out with a cheap wax.

What Causes This Kind of Damage?

  • Cheap or automated car washes

  • Dirty sponges and towels

  • Sun exposure (Canberra UV levels are no joke)

  • Acidic rain and bird droppings

  • Lack of proper protection (no wax, sealant, or coating)

Can You Fix Paint Damage Yourself?

Sure… if you want to risk it.

But here’s the deal: DIY kits can do more harm than good if you don’t know how to assess your clear coat, paint hardness, or defect depth.

That’s where professional detailing steps in — and why Sole Detailing CBR exists.

How We Restore and Protect Your Paint

At Sole Detailing CBR, we don’t do cookie-cutter jobs. Here’s what goes down when you book with us:

Paint Assessment - We inspect your paint under proper lighting to find every swirl, scratch, and defect.

Paint Enhancement or Correction - Depending on the level of damage, we’ll lightly polish or fully correct the paint using machine polishing.

Safe Wash Method  Two-bucket wash, grit guards, pH-balanced products no more swirl marks.

Protection Options- Ceramic coatings, premium sealants, or wax — based on your budget and needs.

This isn’t about covering up damage it’s about reversing it and keeping it from coming back!

A Real Example - Dealership buys a car with failing clear coat

The video and photos above are from a job I took on for one of my regular dealership clients a blue Nissan X-Trail that rolled in with severe clear coat failure across both the roof and bonnet.

They were prepping it for sale and didn’t think much of it…until the car hit the forecourt under the Supercheap Auto lights. That’s when the full damage was exposed oxidized, patchy, completely hammered paint.

They called me, borderline panicking the car needed to move fast, and a respray wasn’t in the budget or the timeline.

What followed was 20 hours of paint correction, spread across 3 stages of cutting and refinement. Panel by panel, defect by defect no fillers, no shortcuts.

The first stage cut knocked down years of damage, The second stage levelled the finish And the final stage brought back that deep, wet gloss

All without a respray. Just precision, patience, and experience.

When it was done, the manager looked at me and said: “Mate, you saved my ass on that one.”

Now here’s the thing:

If I can bring a car back from that, imagine what I can do for yours — especially if it’s just a bit dull, hazy, or lightly swirled.
